Stroke Patient Innovation at Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital

One of the leading causes of death and long-term disability in men is stroke. Following a clinical trial, Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital stroke patients can now opt for an innovative treatment called Vivistim, to supplement their rehabilitation therapy and daily activities. A small device is implanted into the chest wall and the generator is connected to a lead which is tunneled up to the left vagus nerve. This nerve receives stimulation via remote or magnet swipe across the chest during rehabilitation sessions. The device signals the brain to create new pathways to aid in recovery. The device is only activated during rehabilitation sessions and is both FDA approved and Medicare approved. Surgeon, Dr. Julia Pfaff, and the outpatient rehabilitation team at Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital have observed remarkable progress in stroke patients implanted with the device—in their performance of everyday tasks, range of motion and grip. These patients were not seeing significant strength or fine motor skill improvement from therapy alone, prior to implantation.
