Art & Science Exhibit, USF College of Marine Science (CMS) & USF St. Petersburg STEM Club

Innovation District scientists have identified a unique solution to a pervasive challenge—communicating their work in an accessible manner for the non-scientist public. Motivated by the potential of art to cultivate a deeper appreciation of science, CMS scientists Mya Breitbart and Makenzie Kerr created an annual community engagement event called the Art and Science Exhibit in collaboration with USF St. Petersburg STEM Club. The event allows CMS researchers and local artists to showcase their work via a multitude of media, including photography, watercolor, illustrated audiobooks, live performance, video and even repurposed childhood toys like Viewmasters, Kaleidoscopes and Lite-Brites. Past years prompted artists of all levels from Tampa Bay to peer under microscopes, build chemical models, see the uses of liquid nitrogen and even paint with bacteria in petri dishes. The artists then showcased what they saw and produced via painted canvases, sculptures and live performances. Science is a tool of exploration and discovery that allows us to understand the world around us. This event positions art to serve as another powerful tool scientists can use to communicate their findings and help others understand their work. Using art as a communication tool helps scientists increase public engagement, improve the accessibility of science, break down perceived institutional barriers and create a space for innovation and creativity within the scientific community.
