St. Pete Innovation District

MASTER PLAN

What is the Master Plan?

The Master Plan will be a comprehensive look at the places and spaces in and adjacent to the Innovation District. It will include discussions of zoning, infrastructure, public spaces, facility uses, events and more.

Why do the Master Plan?

The District stakeholders often explore how to use public and private places to facilitate the informal and formal collaborations necessary for innovation, as well as spaces for increased research, expanded workforce opportunities, and new educational clusters. Often these discussions can happen in silos. It is our intent to connect as many of these planning efforts together and to provide opportunities for a wide range of stakeholders to be involved.

Why Now?

The Innovation District launched in 2016, and early planning efforts included an initial vision and placemaking and streetscape design. As the District evolved, so has the land and its uses. Opportunities have grown for pedestrian oriented amenities, neighborhood scale cafes, expanded use of office space, and community events.  The adaptive reuse of a building on the Port of St. Pete inspired a co-working space for technology small businesses. To continue to develop these opportunities in a thoughtful and connected way, the District is working with the City of St. Petersburg on a Master Plan.

The Innovation District master planning project has begun!

May 23, 2024

Kudos to the Volunteers of America Florida, City of St. Petersburg, and Pinellas County for the recent opening of the new downtown apartments, located in the Innovation District called Innovare. Innovare’s 50 apartments provide stable homes for individuals and families who earn 60 percent or less of the Area’s Median Income (AMI), including many who are transitioning from homelessness.

Healthcare Innovation

About this Initiative

The earliest discussions of the St. Petersburg Innovation District highlighted potential opportunities from the alignment of research in the fields of ocean health and human health.  The convergence of these “warm, salty, wet” environments are particularly relevant and potentially provide insightful lessons for our coastal community.

The physical proximity of the marine science-related organizations only blocks away from both Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital and Bayfront Health St. Petersburg makes the Innovation District uniquely oriented for these collaborations. The Ocean and Human Health Working Group was formed in 2019 to formalize the exploration of this effort.

In 2022, this effort was expanded and is now called the Healthcare Innovation Working Group.  Their efforts include joint research, as well as healthcare innovation in shared amenities, entrepreneurship incubation, and the education pipeline.
