St. Pete Innovation District

MASTER PLAN

What is the Master Plan?

The Master Plan will be a comprehensive look at the places and spaces in and adjacent to the Innovation District. It will include discussions of zoning, infrastructure, public spaces, facility uses, events and more.

Why do the Master Plan?

The District stakeholders often explore how to use public and private places to facilitate the informal and formal collaborations necessary for innovation, as well as spaces for increased research, expanded workforce opportunities, and new educational clusters. Often these discussions can happen in silos. It is our intent to connect as many of these planning efforts together and to provide opportunities for a wide range of stakeholders to be involved.

Why Now?

The Innovation District launched in 2016, and early planning efforts included an initial vision and placemaking and streetscape design. As the District evolved, so has the land and its uses. Opportunities have grown for pedestrian oriented amenities, neighborhood scale cafes, expanded use of office space, and community events.  The adaptive reuse of a building on the Port of St. Pete inspired a co-working space for technology small businesses. To continue to develop these opportunities in a thoughtful and connected way, the District is working with the City of St. Petersburg on a Master Plan.

Are you like me? Give me a physical map and I get excited! Maybe its a carryover from the pre-GPS days, but I think it is such a fun way to explore an area.

Do you have an innovative idea for the District - a place we are missing, a new use for an existing building, a technology tool... anything? As part of our Master Planning project, we have an online tool available for you to share these ideas.

Imagine a day when you jump in an electronic, autonomous air taxi in St. Pete and head to Tampa International Airport or even to Orlando.

Kudos to the Volunteers of America Florida, City of St. Petersburg, and Pinellas County for the recent opening of the new downtown apartments, located in the Innovation District called Innovare. Innovare’s 50 apartments provide stable homes for individuals and families who earn 60 percent or less of the Area’s Median Income (AMI), including many who are transitioning from homelessness.

Smart City

About this Initiative

The St. Pete Innovation District’s mission is to develop St. Petersburg into an environment that fosters job growth, economic development, and learning and inspiration by bringing innovative people and organizations together.

Nothing better exemplifies this - than our role as an innovation test bed.  We use our geographic base to partner with national organizations, as well as local private companies, nonprofits, government, and educational institutions to test technology and help shape solutions that can benefit our community and someday solve challenges around the world.

The Smart City effort began in 2019 with the SPID’s admission into the US Ignite Smart Gigabit Communities program.  Before we looked at a single technology tool or considered the first pilot project, the Smart City working group started with a discussion about our community’s challenges.  Leveraging past studies and the lived experience of citizens, our discussions spanned infrastructure, education, bicycle safety, transportation, sustainability and resiliency, small business support and wayfinding.  We prioritized these challenges.  Then we looked for ways that existing community expertise and smart city technologies could work to address them.  Those discussions led us to select the four proof of concept projects that are currently underway: Smart Lighting, Guardians of the Gulf (STEAM Education), Smart Intersection, and Digital Inclusion.
