The SPID is home to the largest collection of Marine Science, oceanographic and environmental research agencies and institutions in the Southeast. This includes private business, government agencies, educational institutions and non-profits.
The Innovation District and six partners were recently selected to help grow startups that are working on technology/data solutions for the ocean economy. This powerful collaboration is made possible thanks to $13.9 million awarded by the NOAA Ocean Enterprise Accelerators program.

In July of 2024, researchers at FIO gained access to a sophisticated remotely operated vehicle (ROV), Taurus. ROVs have led to exciting discoveries in the deep-sea environment.
